Two worlds appear side by side. One is plagued by wars, draughts, mass deforestation, polluted coastlines, exploitation of labour forces, political instability, poor hygienic conditions, persecution, forced deportation, abuse of fossil fuels, depleted water sources and food shortages. The other is blessed with full supermarkets, safe streets, stable homes, good healthcare, freedom, paid jobs, respect for human rights, animal welfare, recycling, wind and solar energy, prosperity and social mobility.
In between the worlds fly flocks of birds, thousands of them, traversing the skies in untraceable patterns. There are the birds, with their incessant movement, and then there are planets, asteroids, raw materials, galaxies, blood, cells, weapons, atoms, electrons, commercials, ideologies, fear, trash, hope, even life. Nothing is ever calm in the cosmos. Stillness is a figment of our imagination. The only constant is movement.
If an electron is impossible to stop, why try to stop birds by building fences in the sky?
Birdie is a multimedia performance featuring live video, objects, Hitchcock’s The Birds revisited, scale models, 2.000 miniature animals, wars, smugglers, a massive migration and three performers handling this messy world with wit, criticism and commitment to humankind.
